teenage wasteland.

Another week has gone by, leading us slowly to the day we call “Promotion.”

I’m still wondering what to expect. Every week, I sit here and write about how I’m ready to move on to the next level. & It’s probably getting boring for the reader. But I can’t help but wonder what exactly I want from life. High school’s supposed to prepare you for college and the real world.  But will it really? Will being in these “special academies” help me in the real world?

Honestly, I don’t think they will.  How is picking an academy at age 15 going to help you? What if you decide not to be a writer or lawyer in the long run? What happens then? It seems like I have more questions than answers. And there’s no one to really answer them for me. Counselors, both high school and middle school, will avoid the question entirely, mainly because they believe its your decision. If they don’t totally avoid the question, they’ll give you some pre-calculated answer that they’re supposed to give.

By writing about this, I don’t mean to come across as pessimistic.. I just think its a waste of time to be in an academy like “Law, Policies and Criminal Justice” or in “International Studies” if you aren’t sure what you want in life. But I do think that academies like “Media Literacy” or “Science, Math and Technology” are good, because this way kids can go into many different fields instead of focusing on one thing.

I do think that high school prepares you for the real world, but there are some things schools can do, besides providing academies, to help kids. Connections, a class that freshmen take, should be available more than one year. One point teachers have made is that you are allowed to change your academy a week or so after choosing it, but only if you have a particular reason.

These academies are supposed to help us throughout our high school years. I just hope they actually serve their purpose, without getting in the way of the high school growth experience.
